Position Summary

The SMERF Sales Manager is responsible for driving group room revenue from the Social, Military, Educational, Religious, Fraternal (SMERF) segments, as well as Wedding Room Blocks, Associations, Tour & Travel, Entertainment, Wholesale/FIT, Government, and other complementary markets. This role is ideal for a proactive, experienced sales professional with strong San Francisco market knowledge who thrives on uncovering new business, building lasting relationships, and representing the hotel throughout the community.

 

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Business Development

  • Actively solicit and secure new business from assigned SMERF segments, including wedding blocks, association groups, entertainment, government, and tour & travel accounts.
  • Conduct outside sales calls, client meetings, site visits, and networking activities to maximize new opportunities.
  • Attend local and national trade shows, industry events, chambers, marketplaces, and community functions.
  • Maintain a strong presence in the San Francisco market and prospect daily to build a healthy future pipeline.
  • Develop and execute targeted strategies to grow production within each assigned segment.
  • Consistently follow up with leads, nurture relationships, and close business that supports the hotel’s revenue goals.

Account Management & Revenue Growth

  • Build and maintain relationships with key accounts, travel partners, and planners.
  • Prepare proposals, negotiate rates, and secure contracts that align with revenue strategies.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Management and Operations to ensure accurate room blocks, group details, and seamless on-site execution.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and industry shifts to identify new opportunities and strengthen market presence.
  • Document all activities, contacts, and bookings in the CRM system with accuracy and consistency.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Participate in weekly sales meetings, forecasting sessions, and strategy discussions.
  • Partner with Marketing to support campaigns and creative initiatives that drive awareness.
  • Represent the hotel professionally in all interactions and uphold the brand’s service philosophy.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2–3 years of hotel sales experience required; SMERF, wedding block, or group sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the San Francisco market, including demand patterns, competitive sets, and local accounts.
  • Proven track record in outside sales, prospecting, and closing new business.
  • Comfortable attending events, conducting sales calls, and sourcing new clients in person.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with CRM systems, Delphi, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Should be excited to work in the office five days a week; this is not a remote position.
